Firm-Fixed-Price

Firm-fixed-price projects are highly focused efforts. For these types of projects, we use discussion boards, file sharing sites, video teleconferencing and Web meetings for virtually all of the interactions for a project.

Process improvement and software documentation efforts are most successful with a large number of short, often one-on-one meetings. Physical meetings would result in most of our time being spent in planes, trains, and automobiles as we hopped from meeting to meeting. This is the most cost-effective approach for the majority of our customers, as it allows us to task-switch from project to project very easily through the course of a day.

Hourly

Cost-plus, or staffing projects are typically long-term, on-site efforts where the customer prefers to have one or more staff on-site for a wide variety of task assignments. This is usually an environment where the general scope of work is defined, but the specific activities and projects worked may vary from week to week and even day-to-day, depending on the customer's needs. This provides the greatest flexibility for the customer.

We don't do this for normal projects anymore. The success rate of unfocused, general-purpose efforts is too low for us to continue supporting this model. The only exception to this is litigation support, where the very nature of the process is exploratory and subject to re-direction and may involve subcontract relationships. For this reason, litigation hourly rates are usually negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
